#50 & #51 (English) Mental Health in the Peruvian Diaspora
Joicy Salgado, LMHC, Clinical Director and Founder of Salgado Psychotherapy
Joicy (She/Her/Ella) is the Clinical Director and Founder of Salgado Psychotherapy. She is a cultural, trauma and healed informed psychotherapist. She has a Masters in Mental Health Counseling and is licensed to practice in New York. She has 9 years of experience working in the mental health field with children, adolescents, adults, and the elderly. She has aided individuals with an array of mental health conditions from mild adjustment disorders to personality disorders.
Her philosophy is that through conversation and exploration we are all able to become aware of patterns created through our life experiences, develop healthy ways to navigate interactions and have the opportunity to live a stable and healthy life. There is no “one size fits all” approach to therapy. Joicy utilizes a combination of practices with a focus on psychodynamic and humanistic approaches to best drive the therapeutic journey. She believes that exploring current situations paired with reflecting on past experiences can be a recipe to develop an awareness which can drive the process of change in people.
As a first-generation Peruvian immigrant, from an Indigenous background, Joicy can relate to the unique experiences this can bring on top of life’s challenges as well as mental health conditions. Her therapeutic training has been key in aiding the immigrant population. In turn, her personal experiences have served as one source from which she draws empathy.
This includes but is not limited to the Latinx community, immigrants, and children of immigrants. She helps them by aiding their process in developing skills to navigate life and she has a holistic focus on their mental health. Allyship, privilege, racism, colorism, and colonization on mental health are topics discussed within the therapeutic process. Joicy is also bilingual in Spanish.

Allpa was born from two passions, learning about the different cultures of the world, and food. Through their time traveling they have come to admire the different types of foods found in each country and region. Allpa believes that food is not only a source of nourishment and enjoyment but also a way to learn about local cultures. When learning about any culture it is impossible to ignore gastronomy.
